My Shame..

My Shame  - Ryne Crabtree

Be there, to love and raise forbid,
Left frail to raise frail, one too old the other too young.
“You know how to be an adult,” I bid.

Left your burden at front door and slid,
Out the back, like a thief, nothing stolen but childhood.
“The problem is you don’t know how to be a kid.”

No father to know, a mother’s love forbid.
No answers to questions a child should not have.
“You know how to be an adult,” I bid.

When your mind changed I should’ve hid.
Wasn't love for me, but ego of the monster you were with.
“The problem is you don’t know how to be a kid.”

Wasn’t me but little sisters that suffered his sin.
I abandoned them, left them behind, just like you taught me.
“You know how to be an adult,” I bid.

To my grave take that shame, myself I’ll never forgive.
But as a father now I strive for my repentance through them.
“You know how to be an adult,” I bid.
“The problem is you don’t know how to be a kid.”

About this poem

My attempt at a Villanelle poem. Some things shouldn't be forgiven. The shame I carry is the only thing that's kept me from too far off the path...
