Fireflies

Surani Chandrasekara 1975 (Colombo)

FIREFLIES

Hung upon a willow tree

Weaken & heard no plea

Oh! can they flee...

No one could ever foresee

The moon's slenderly touch

Crickets sang merrily so much

Jasmine stars danced with their bunch

In the breeze where the willow tree hushed

She shed tears with no fear

Danced to the rhythm to free her dears

The feathery grass kissed the jars

The fireflies fled with the evening stars
