They've Got It All Wrong

Kristin Austin 1987 (Hillsboro)

I often wonder,
“What do they all see?”
When everyone says,
That they look up to me

They say I’m brave,
They say I’m strong
But I don’t think they realize,
They’ve got it all wrong

If they could only see,
How I’m broken and scared
For I never Imagined
My life would ever become this hard

I never saw it coming
Or had a chance to prepare
My life would change in an instant
And only a few would actually care

They say I am lucky
A miracle on earth
I say they’re mistaken
I’ve felt cursed since birth

No matter the effort
I put forth to succeed
Once I start to rise
I’m knocked back down to my knees

I’ve always been humble
That’s why I don’t see
“What did I do so wrong?”
That makes this life such a torture to me

Maybe one day I’ll understand
Why that night I didn’t die
And why I’m left to suffer
Instead of rising into the sky

But no matter the amount of pain
Or the daily torture I endure
I must hold on to my faith
“Its for the greater good” I’m sure

For as long as I believe
That God has a greater plan for me
And that somehow this all fits
Hopefully one day I’ll see.

But that doesn’t make it hurt less
Or ease my struggles everyday
The things people take for granted
I’ve now had to learn a different way

I can’t do the things I use to
I’ve changed in many ways
I’m no longer the person I once was
That feeling haunts me every day

But as I face this demon
That’s now my everyday life
I know I’m blessed to have my woman
That I will one day make my wife

Even though I’m full of demons
To many for me to fight
She met me in my darkness
And brought me back into the light

So hearing that I inspire
Others every single day
Makes me wonder what would’ve happened
If that night, things went the other way

But just to let others know
I’m not as strong as I appear
For now, my daily reality
Was once, my biggest fear

So while inspiring others
They’ll never get to see
The horrible breakdowns I have
When it’s only just me

My message to you all
I hope you’ll understand
The biggest demons are conquered
When you’re with someone hand-in-hand

Although my body is crushed
And my life will never be the same
I’m blessed the same hand I’m holding
Also wants my last name
