The ten amendments by Wayne Morrison
As we sign this petition
For our attrition
We prepare for the fights
To gain our rights
With this blood on our hands
We make anew these lands
They tried to take our religions
They tried to make our decisions
In these new lands
We toil with our hands
To make things fair
Unlike the kings lair
We must make selection
Of our weapon
To prevent harm
We must bare arm
To prevent another king
We must do something
As the british beckoned
We quarter the unwelcomed
No more
We'll show them the door
No longer in peace
You'll give up your feast
This is our land
No longer in kings hand
When effects are seized with doubtfulness
Then by oath is it unlawfulness
What is owned
Without permission cannot be loaned
There will be no denial
To free trial
Every person will receive justness
Before a court to deal justice
There will be no defiance
To the right of silence
Each trial shall be dealt with speed
For this is a need
Each man shall know of what he is accused
For the prevention of any to be confused
Before the public
In this republic
Even with civil crime
The jury shall be on time
Even with money
The tried will have company
Because this is a court of law
Not one of flaw
As for the accused
None shall be abused
For it is cruel and unjust
This we can trust
Even in strife
We must respect life
Even what's not within the constitution
Shall be respected in this institution
Even those that are not explicit
And not illicit
For the ones immoral
There will be no quarrel
But for the government
It's power has limit
It has restriction
By this depiction
To ensure it is legal
By will of the people
With these ten
Rights have been given to men
To ensure our land
Falls not into tyrants hand
To ensure peace
To let it increase
About this poem
I wrote this poem for a class project and it was suggested I submit it to some poetry contests by my peers, so here I am. I've only recently started writing, but I hope that it is far from the last I will write. -Wayne
