Mt. Rushmore, South Dakota
Four sets of eyes gazing over the land.
I wonder if they like what they command.
Has our country turned-out the way they planned?
Each one a giant in a special way.
A man for all seasons in his own day.
If they could talk, I wonder what they'd say.
Four virtues represented in granite:
Leadership
General Washington - resolute and tall.
Read and equipped to go to the wall.
Against all odds he threw off the yoke.
With a rag-tag army of common folk.
Vision
Jefferson knew our back yard to the west
Would be his country's next arduous test.
A fresh, robust nation needs to expand.
He spared no expense to procure the land.
Compassion
Lincoln's country suffered a broken heart.
Brother and brother were tearing apart.
When the smoke cleared and the dying was done.
He gently reminded, "Let us be one."
Strength
Teddy's 'Big Stick' reached around the world.
In far-off places our flag unfurled.
Now the 'old world' stands in line and waits.
Its new shepherd is the United States.
Four sets of eyes gazing over the land.
Has our country turned-out the way they planned?
About this poem
I grew up in the Black Hills of South Dakota. Our family took many picnic trips to Mt. Rushmore. This has motivated me to write a poem about it. I hope you enjoy it.
