A Prayer on a Stormy Night

A Prayer on a Stormy Night
By Tim Seigel

I will trust you, if within this stormy night.
You will call me out of my boat
To walk with you on the waves of fright
Your familiar, urgent voice saying, “Come.”

I will believe in you, if in the chaos,
Of rock shattering winds, earthquakes, and fire,
You whisper my name in the silence of my cross,
Alone, afraid, dejected; waiting for a sign.

I will follow you, if you prove through my pain,
There is rational, logical, reason beyond
Every shadowy doubt pervading my brain,
That you will save me as I falter, by my fragile will.

I will trust your Word, if you but promise,
There is nothing to fear in my microscopic faith,
As your gentle hand proffers solace,
Through the terrors of this night.

I will express my joy with a grateful heart,
For this dark, silent sanctuary where
Gracious echos of prayer impart
Your still presence.

About this poem

I wrote this over a year ago on a night when I read about Peter asking Jesus to call him out of the boat to walk on the water with him on a stormy night. This prayer is about how we deal with the storms of life we face.
