at lily's pond
The maidens of lily pond sallied gentle greetings as I
entered their country. It must be morning here I
thought as a dew of light freshness filled my lungs. I
wakened as one out of dreams unslept. The waters were
also pure I saw as one ripple after another
quietly lapping on the shore.
The maidens were fair, of fairer sort than silk or
satin. For while their brows wore the noble accent of
princesses - their eyes laughed like children, children
of whom I was their doll. For they led it as a child
to their waters. Here I was seated with gentle
gestures; and after they were certain of comfort, they
plead for their momentary absence. How from lily pond the
lilies left their roots I did not espie but the maidens, collecting a
few, dipped them in, then out of the waters. They
watched as I received the lilly into my trembling
hands and smiled as they saw it raised to my lips
- the same time it kissed theirs. I felt it sing, they
sang the same song and thanks be to God, it also had feet!
For from the deep a song is sung that resteth not till
soles do leap. O papa, my father, the springs above
must truly be rich when children are hired and beggars
find drink!
