Dark Sorrow
Rosa Maria Aguirre 1981 (Fond du lac, Wisconsin)
You are in a dark, very deep pit.
As you look up, all you see are the grey clouds beginning to form in the sky.
There is no way out.
No one knows you are there.
You belong no where.
No name, no one cares you exist.
You are sitting on the moist dirt beneath you.
Your spawn sitting, cowering, next to you.
A fear and depression you can clearly see in their eyes.
You have lost count of the years you have been there.
The clothing you all wear is torn and uncomfortable.
You look around the tunnel pit, to see the claw marks imprinted on the dirt.
You then close your eyes and tears fall down your cheek.
You have nearly lost hope.
You then start to wonder, as your faith weakness,
“How did I get here?”
“Why have I, no one to call out to for help?”
You then start to feel rain drops fall onto your face.
Just then the only thing running through your mind is to lift, with all your force, your spawn to safety.
The rain begins to pour harder.
The pit is filling quickly.
You decide to render your life for theirs.
They escape, but it’s too late for you.
Your last words are,
“Keep each other safe, always”
“I’m sorry”

About this poem
So a few years ago I was in a very dark place. I endured much pain and suffering for many years, although I can only blame myself for staying in such a relationship. This was the first thing I wrote when I started my healing process. (December 2017)
