Then and Now

I remember the first time I walked threw the elementary school doors,
Arguing with students saying that's mine not yours,
I remember worrying about falling and ruining my favorite dress,
Now I always wonder why I look such a mess,
When I worried about getting on stage just to perform,
When I didn't know i'd have to completely transform,
I remember being so chatty speaking my mind,
Now I feel declined and always standing behind,
I remember the feeling of picking my favorite flowers,
Now all I feel is crashing towers,
I remember when sports were about creating a team not meant to cause a bunch of broken dreams,
Back before we were even teens,
I remember always feeling comforted and warm,
Not always feeling caught up in the storm,
I remember lining up in a row at recess to race,
When I wasn't feeling like I had a clouded head space,
I remember when beauty and makeup didn't matter,
Back before there was no drama and chatter,
When you didn't always feel like you had to balance on a platter,
Just to flatter those who are irrelevant and dont even matter,
I remember crying over my barbie doll breaking,
Now i’m crying cause my body feels like it's constantly aching,
The feeling of my bones breaking,
The feeling of the ground shaking,
And all they say now is “Oh, your fine, your just faking”,
I remember when people at least acted like they cared,
Not just compared there story to yours or cut you off like slamming doors,
I remember lying when I accidentally broke my grandmas glass,
Now i'm lying about being okay in class,
I remember quite a lot because of school,
But I wasn't taught by a teacher,
I was taught by fools.

About this poem

This poem is about what we have learned, been through, and feel because of school, and how its changes us, how different we felt in elementary compared to how it is in middle school and high school.
