LESS
LESS
By Art Hyde
Less is more,
says my friend and guest.
“You’ve had too much,
of all the best.”
Less was hers,
more was mine,
my mammoth houses,
rarest wines.
The finest clothes,
expensive cars,
country clubs, not filthy bars.
Lavish parties,
for friends with cash,
mostly cool…
more or less.
“You’re repulsive,”
said she, the guest.
A reply from me,
“But you’re a mess!”
Less is less than more can be,
I’m warm at night, and trouble free.
You have worries,
can’t sleep at night,
the winter cold will take its bite.
You’ll wait your check,
each month to see,
if life can go as pleasantly, with less, with less.
It’s really all you’ve got,
your life without, with not.
You lack the basic needs – and none the best,
your view of less, is more a plea,
of stubborn pride, less integrity.
I say, “More for everyone!”
About this poem
This poem plays as an argument between two people. One is very rich, the other is convinced that having very little in life makes one happiest. e.g., Hard work and planning vs. lack of planning, education and hard work. Of course, there is an irony that exist between the lines; many assume that rich people were always rich, and never had to experience poverty. The truth is, according to my poem, having more is better than having less if managed wisely and with integrity.
