La Grand'Place
Emile Verhaeren 1855 (Sint-Amands) – 1916 (Rouen)
Les magasins de la Grand'Place
Mirent leur deuil et leur passé,
Et l'or de leur fronton usé,
Dans les égouts qui les enlacent.
Un drapeau pend comme un haillon,
Au pignon rouge de la Banque ;
L'heure est vieillotte : une dent manque
Au râtelier du carillon.
La pluie, à tomber là, s'ennuie,
Tout son de cloche y semble un glas,
Tout mouvement y semble las,
L'heure qui vient vaut l'heure enfuie.
La façade du médecin
Regarde celle du notaire,
Voici le porche autoritaire
Du collège diocésain.
Les ténébreux judas des portes
Se surveillent de loin en loin ;
Le haut clocher semble un témoin
De tant de choses qui sont mortes.
Les murs sont pleins de souvenirs,
Cassés ou mordus par les rouilles
Et l'habitude s'y verrouille
Contre l'assaut des avenirs.
Tout y perdure en son bien-être.
On vit loin de tout bruit vivant,
A regarder passer le vent
Et la poussière à la fenêtre.
Les servantes y font marcher
Le rouet gris des existences,
Et façonnent, par leurs sentences,
Une sagesse à bon marché.
Les échevins sont sûrs et veillent ;
Le crime a ses deux poings liés.
On met l'ordre sous l'oreiller,
Et l'on s'endort sur ses oreilles.
