The Poet Within

The Poet Within

I have fought my battles daily,
Half a century’s past.
I hear you speak of your inner self to me
No longer cruel and conniving.

Your words speak to me with eloquence,
At times, too deep to comprehend-
The poet that lives within me
Whispers innermost thoughts
with much care, respect, and harmony.

Your words may be incomprehensible
To others who walk a different pathway,
But to me your passion runs deep,
To touch the very core of me, that poet alive within.

Words once were bittersweet,
Twisting wrathfully inside of my heart,
But now I comprehend
That they were only an elusive part of me.

Your passion is lithe and tender-
Cradling me as you would a slumbering, innocent child-
Evoking both tears and laughter from within-

I invite you to reappear and speak to me
Upon this early morning’s dawning.
After the sun has risen you tip-toe away in silence-

I know you shall return to comfort and inspire me
With the sweetness of your intonations,
When I need to see the light.

I shall welcome your companionship,
But most of all the music of your spirit.
What you give me is none but love
And the gift of your artistry and wisdom
Through your softly spoken words.
