FOR RICHARD IVORY

Cleo E. Brown 1954 (Oakland, California)

FOR RICHARD IVORY by Cleo E. Brown

Drifting
On the edge of darkness
Arch angels do harken
To your forlorn call
Meant to wedge
A divide between
Thee and the devil.

Disheveled, your voice full of sleep
Gabriel does help to keep
Your trumpet muffled
Against the burgeoning storm.

Torrents of rain
Do drain you
Of your spirited quest
And zest for life.

Do not fight the night
Nor, ascending to the highest heights
Being a champion for right
And the honor of man,
Do hold my hand
For, he will take you
To the promised land of "the mountain top."
