Analysis of Incomplete

E.S. Conway 1985 (United Kingdom)

They're going to the beach today,
But I can't go,
Because they'll know.

I'll lay upon my towel,
Looking to the sky,
Then from out of nowhere,
I know I'll hear the cry:

"You're a faggot", "you're a guy!"
"You're a Bloke in a sarong".
I do not have the strength in me,
To explain why they are wrong.

So I'll stay at home, Sat inside,
And watch my big tv.
That's all I need, that's all I have,
Just myself and me.

They're going for a swim today,
But I can't go,
Because they'll know.

I'll be stared at when I change,
I'll be looked at with disdain,
Before I even start to swim,
Paranoia turns to pain.

So I'll stay at home, in the warm,
And play games on my phone.
That's all I need, that's all I have,
Just me, myself, alone.

They all go places I can't go,
Because if I go,
Then they'll know,
They'll know I'm broken,
That I'm not right,
Fear turns to hate,
And they ignite,
Words of spite,
Words of pain,
Cutting deep,
Over again.

So I'll stay at home, and I'll wait,
I'll look forward to the day,
When I can truly be the girl I am,
In every single way.

E.S. Conway

A poet by proxy of therapy. Her works (with only a couple of exceptions) are comprised of poems written in a form of therapy diary, they served for several years as an aid to dealing with situations that may or may not be within the poems themselves. This is also the reason for so much rhyming; though not necessary for poetry, it was part of what made poetry therapeutic for her and so is an almost certain constant. more…
