Analysis of Listen

Perhaps there are people
uglier than us,
wiser than us,
wilder than us.
Perhaps there are people with nothing but kindness in their hearts.
Maybe, or maybe not-
there are people who love stronger than us, smile wider, and hug tighter than us.
Perhaps there are families who don't gather around a fireplace on Sunday nights,
they will never read our favourite books
or slow dance to our favourite songs.
Maybe, or maybe not - there are countries
with nothing but happy people in their towns. Perhaps they are rich,
and drink only expensive wines.
Though maybe they would rather drink lemonade,
and share their school lunch.
Perhaps there are people
who don't love their mothers,
and whose fathers drunkenly swear-
or people who would trade
every last drop of expensive wine just to see their mothers again.
You see, only if you listen-
you will have a chance to understand.
All I'm trying to say is
listen to all you have,
and not only to what you wish to gain.
