Analysis of "Who are you"

JJ 2003 (Oshawa)

Who are you' by JJ (me)
“Who are you?”
When I was a child I was so happy
Because life made sense with chocolate and candy.
With all the rainbows and glitter I got, nothing was better than the thought of flying, but I was a kid. It didn’t have to make sense but It did. So I grew up not making sense thinking I hate you were I love you and I love you was all hate. Maybe it’s my fault for dreaming so big, like people asking me why are you so late. So I grew up looking in my mirror and saying “Who are you?” are you a girl or just some toy, that someday my body will be destroyed by a person who will take its chance to ruin all that I..am?
What am I? Does my gender define who I will be? A housewife to children of three, with a husband who comes home late, never getting attention till it to late BOOM. There it is, I overthink till I think it is, right. Who are you? My first real boyfriend said while I made mistakes I wish to turn, pretend like it never happened maybe because I relate so much where it was all a “Mistake”. That’s what I heard, from my mother of 4. A Miracle touching the word like it didn’t matter before “ WHO ARE YOU”. I screamed out loud, want the words to be found, but all I can see is “I hate you” “why do I gotta be me” “why do I gotta act like im seen like I’m understood like I know what’s bad or good like I’m a child but I need to be a woman because in problems like these DRUGS won’t FIX ME”. I almost turn
to drugs, like weed was my best friend I didn’t know how to trust..
“Who are you?” a princess or a queen even a police officer who isn’t mean. I love her, the child I used to be maybe the question is “Who I WANT to be” so I look in the mirror and say “this is me, and nobody changing it expect for me” I love her, who I am now maybe this time I will get my crown, so i can sit down and finally be found and look at my child and say this “who do you want to be?”... Cause now I understand what’s it like to be needed when I don’t think I need it. I love her…” who are you” I am her and that’s okay because now I know.. it’s not too late. Thank you.
