Analysis of Prayer To The Grim Reaper
PRAYER TO THE GRIM REAPER.
We are counted as trees in this Thine vast forest,
And in Thy hot displeasure, Thou givest us early rest.
Hew us down no more in Thine anger, Oh, let Thy mercy overshadow Thy power!
Thou goest forth thundering, "Hew them down! Hew them down!"
No tree that was ever survived Thine blastful frown.
Oh Thou Reaper! for our sakes, put away Thy grim,
And let not the fire of heaven over us grow dim.
Uproot not that which Thou didst plant,
More flowering and flourishing years to Thy trees grant.
By Thy wrath, we are consumed and are swept away for ever,
Deprived of our blossoming mornings and straightaway we wither.
Grim Reaper, verily, some trees are indeed slow to yield,
But assuage Thine anger and over them, do not Thy po wer wield.
Return Oh Reaper and water Thine tender trees!
Pass over them with Thy cool and gentle breeze.
Instead of Thine anger, pour down the rain,
And Thy frail, fragile trees shall yield fruits again and a gain.
Let Thy trees grow, and let their days be many,
And in Thy mercy, Oh Reaper, hew us not down early!
