Le silence est peut-être une voix qui s’est tue
Comme le dieu se tait debout en sa statue,
Et par elle n’a plus de vivant aujourd’hui
Que son ombre, au soleil, qui tourne autour de lui.
Le silence est peut-être une voix qui sait tout
Comme un dieu taciturne en son marbre debout,
Dont le geste éternel fait signe qu’on écoute
Ce que dira son ombre aux passants de la route,
Qui regardent, d’en bas et le genou plié,
L’ordre silencieux du dieu pétrifié.
