Analysis of My Evolving Love For English

When I was five
English looked like an alien
Something incomprehensible
An enigma

When I was six
English still looked like an alien
Something foreign
I couldn’t wrap my head around-
It made me feel like an alien too

When I was seven
English looked like math
Something familiar yet
I couldn’t understand
Both had their challenges that I was not ready to face
Not yet

When I was eight
English looked like an enemy
Something oppressive
Everyone and everything knew
The big bold lettering on the exit sign knew
John with an IQ of four knew
I was pulled out of class I-
Was embarrassed
I failed
All because of English

When I was nine
English looked like an amateur magician
Something cheating
Everyone could see the understanding
Yet I still couldn’t see
Couldn’t comprehend
My eyes were so far away
I was blind

When I was ten
English looked like a mystery
Something puzzling
I couldn’t quite grasp
And while I didn’t love it just yet
I couldn’t deny the thrill
Of unraveling it secrets

When I was eleven
English looked like an extraordinary
Something powerful
A force to be reckoned with
The meaning began to seep into my bones
Taking root in my youthful mind

When I was twelve
English looked like coffee
Something bittersweet
It awakened aggrieved memories
But I was transfixed by the words, the creativity-
The feelings

When I was thirteen
English looked,felt, like pain
Something agonizing
Everyone was sick-
We were all stuck
All I ever did was-
Read
And write
And stare
At the words on my screen
Second by Second
Minute by minute
The words clouded and I was forced to shut my eyes

When I was fourteen
English felt like a hobby
Something pleasing
Not yet quite committed
But allowed me to be free

When I was fifteen
English felt like my mom
Something, someone, I loved
It embodied her
Consumed her and now-
It consumed me

When I was sixteen
English felt like my soul
Something spirited
It was as if I was reborn through the language
I couldn’t explain it
My profound love
For English

So
As I am writing this poem
My heart
Has filled once again.

About this poem

This poem is about a time in my life where I struggled immensely with English. At a very young age I was enrolled in an immersion program . By studying this new language, it took away from my knowledge of my natural born language. It was pretty embarrassing and frightening at the time because it was an odd feeling not being totally comfortable speaking your innate language.

Anabelle Rodriguez

My name is Anabelle Rodriguez I am 16 years old and a rising junior in high school. I have two sisters, two dogs, three birds, and a guinea pig. Yes I know it is a full house. When I am not busy my favorite thing to do is go outside and read for hours on end, or if it’s raining snuggle up into a blanket a read there instead. My lifelong goal is to be an author, whether it be about lovely poems or whimsical stories. I feel that my inspiration for writing is deeply rooted in my mother. I believe she has a gift with words and the mere act of hearing her think ignited my passion, in hopes that I could inspire someone with my words. more…
