Analysis of Drowning in Love

Christine Holland 2007 (Allen Park Michigan)

I don’t think I fell for you slowly,
but then again,
I don’t think I fell for you all at once either.
If I had to guess,
I’d probably say
that my feelings for you
we’re like the steady tides of the ocean;
ebbing and flowing right beneath the surface
of all of our interactions.
Sometimes they threatened to pull me under,
and drown me in the intensity of it all,
sometimes I could forget they were there altogether;
dulled down to a soft pulsing ache between my ribs.
If you ask me,
I wouldn’t be able to tell you the exact moment I “fell”
but I do remember one specific thing,
a small, seemingly insignificant moment,
where water rushed past my lips
and filled my lungs.
