Analysis of Where do I start
I asked, where do I start…
How do I go on with such a huge hole in my heart.
I sat down and thought, how do I make things better,
So I wrote myself a little letter.
As they say, the best horses go to heaven with no tail,
Every owner will have a weep and a wail.
But knowing you gave them the very best home,
And all the memories in your head, so tightly sewn.
Have peace from knowing you took pride in their care,
The love, the trust… nothing can compare.
Knowing they were the very best of the best,
But now the time has come, so sadly, to rest.
It doesn’t stop here, their wings have been gained,
Despite the fact we are so very pained.
They gallop away as free as can be,
Trust me, one day, you shall see.
So when you think you are saying goodbye,
And you sit back, letting out a big sigh.
Remember it is only goodbye for now
However You may be thinking, well… how?
One day you will meet again
And pick back up the leather rein
You will gallop away so far and so free,
Possibly along the coast in front of the sea.
So when you think, where do I start,
Remember they still have the place in your heart.
They never really leave, always your best friend,
So please don’t forget… this isn’t the end.

About this poem
I am a huge horse lover. On the 17th January 2023 I found my pony of 8 years had passed unexpectedly. So as I laid awake at 11pm one night, I decided to write a little poem to help me and others in the same/who have been in the same situation as myself, as like me, it breaks you into a million pieces. I find a little comfort from the words I wrote.
