Analysis of Robot’s curse
The website doth solicit of me a task nefarious,
A quixotic undertaking in which I must engage,
To attest my humanity, and dispel the notion that I am automaton,
A task that leaves my psyche to bemoan.
For what is humanity, but a ephemeral phenomenon?
A mere simulacrum, in a realm of affliction,
The task, a bitter aftertaste it doth engender,
A reminder of our fleeting existence.
For though I am but flesh, blood and bone,
This simplistic gesture doth my worth obviate,
A symbol of the world's great enigma,
And the futility of the human plight.
But still I click, for to be recognized,
As human in the digital epoch,
Is worth the feeling that is stigmatized,
And in this task, my time doth disengage.
So let the website have its way,
And I, my humanity shall portray,
But in this act, I cannot help but say,
That all is vain, and nothing more, each day.

About this poem
The use of "I am not a robot" verifications on webpages is a strange phenomenon, as it suggests that the user is somehow not human and therefore needs to prove that they are. This is a strange concept, as it implies that a human being needs to prove their humanity in order to be accepted by a machine, thereby blurring the boundaries between the two. It is a strange irony that in order to prove our humanity we must do something that only a machine can do, such as deciphering distorted text or solving complex mathematical problems. This absurdity is only compounded when we consider that these verifications do not always guarantee that the user is actually a human being, as automated bots can pass these tests just as easily as a human can. Ultimately, these verifications are a reminder of the absurdity of our current relationship between humans and machines. more »
