Analysis of Thank God for the Irish
We can ne’er agree
Or we want more
And we want it now
What was it we want?
We bully each other
And kill each other
Or starve each other
Even eat each other
Plastic was fantastic
So was fossil fuel
West is best!
Or is it communist East?
Mother Teresa had her limelight
But Di died didn’t she
The Priests love their fiddle
Nobody remembers the nice
Technology will save us
Let’s go to Mars
We could solve world hunger
Nah, don’t be an eejit
Over and over
For millennia I tell you
So I have a wee chuckle
Aye, we be mad

About this poem
Bullying, killing, starving or eating each other represents the tyrannies of the world. For example, Joseph Stalin and Mao Zedong caused manmade famine and their people turned to cannibalism in order to survive. Mother Teresa placed herself in complete service to others. Upon her death, Princess Diana had her funeral the next day. Not to diminish Princess Diana's charity, the paparazzi and the world turned their attention to her rather than Mother Teresa whom, if one had to rank, gave more. Priests are only now being held accountable for their molestations which had been covered up for who knows how long. Perhaps people were in denial because of the perceived goodness of their work in the church. Looking at history, darker stories far outweigh those that are good. As a society our technology has accelerated in the last few centuries with amazing achievement. Nevertheless, we repeat our mistakes. Even today at this writing, Putin is committing heinous war crimes with propaganda. Globally we have resources to solve poverty and our ecological mess, but instead it is spent on war. It is a mad world we live in; none of it makes any sense. Humour is used as relief for this madness. The Irish are known for laughing at this insanity. As the saying goes: "The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result." more »
