Analysis of Guyon

Douglas Blair 1951 (London)

I am here for

About the Lord.

And in so doing

I have clung

To Holy Writ.

No Pope's tradition.

Not a bit.

No feigned reticence

Fear to show.

I, determined Him

Him to know.

Jesus, bearer of

All my dismal loads.

The Law that goads

And tries to

See me criminal

The chill, the darkness

The friendships gone.

But I have One

Replacing all the rest

The kindest, nearest

Teacher, the best.

And He will visit

He does so sweet.

And I have savoured

Each Holy Treat.

So, come the achings

And shivering Night.

Mine the ordinance

To pray, to fight.

These bars to hold

These bars to scold.

But broad the vistas

By Faith I'm told.

*Madame Jeanne Marie Guyon, 1648-1717. French mystic  and poet much persecuted by Roman Catholicism. Imprisoned, wasting, supremely reflective.
