Analysis of Growing Love
Kasonde Lwao 2004 (Lusaka)
Like a child, it grows
Everyday inch by inch, width by width, depth by depth
It grows with curiosity, learning each day
A rhythm of love vibrating within me every which way
My heart is a drum
And the drummer does not rest
Constantly playing singles and doubles in my chest
They say that one cannot truly love at this tender age
But from long ago you sparked a fire in my furnace and now it burns with rage
A rage of despair, one that is unfair
A rage of sadness, a rage of madness, a rage of anything but gladness
All symptoms of your absence.
I weep again and again
Not of overflowing anxiety or stress
All those things compared to you are less
I weep again because the hurricane of your absence is a pain
Being without you makes my eyes rain
Violent waves wash over my heart
Thunderstorms crash over my mind
So in turn water drowns my eyes
And rivers violate my cheeks
You’re my suffering and my joy.
The thought of you turns my anchored face upside down
Breaking records for the quickest change to a smile from a frown
When I think of God’s gift to me, I think of you
A graceful present that always feels brand new
Some spend their whole lives longing to win the million-dollar prize
Gnashing their teeth to jump out of the rat race
But I win the lottery every day when I gaze upon that smile on your face.
Now the drummer plays louder, with more vigor and passion
This time with Happy paradiddles
You’re the one who heeds my warning when I sing my arrogant riddles
You’re the Saint who lifts me in my time of gloom
That’s why my drum beats faster when we’re in the same room
Every day with you feels like a Valentine’s journey
Still, I’ll love you with my whole heart if you let me
I cannot wait for the Day when we become one
And by God’s grace, we will be led to the day and the sun.

About this poem
I wrote this poem as a way to express a relatively new sensation I was experiencing which I assume to be love. Each stanza portrays my growing feelings of torture and admiration which I undergo for my best friend who is now also my girlfriend.
