Analysis of BROKEN LOVE (GBV))

Mkutu Sisonke 2003 (South Africa, Eastern Cape)

YOU SAID YOU LOVE ME I BELIEVED THAT
YOUR ALLURING MANEUVER MADE ME FALL AND YOU LET ME
YOU KEPT ASSURING THAT LOVING YOU IS RIGHT
THEN YOU SHOWED YOUR OTHER SIDE, MADE ME YOUR PUNCHING BAG ALL IN A NAME OF LOVE OR SO YOU WOULD SAY
WITH YOUR ACTIONS SO DISGUSTING AND UNBEARABLE I STAYED PLEASE DON’T ASK ME WHY
I LET MY HEART MISLEAD ME AND OVERLOOKED WHAT I KNEW

DON'T GET ME WRONG I DON'T HATE YOU I JUST HATE HOW I LET YOU HURT ME BECAUSE I HAD POWER TO END IT ALL YET I CHOSE OTHERWISE.
HAD THOUSANDS REASONS TO LEAVE AND MY LOOKED FOR ONE TO STAY. I COULD'VE CHOSEN MY HAPPINESS BUT I REMEMBERED I KNEW THAT THROUGH YOU.

I HELD ON TO THE MEMORY THAT YOU ONCE MADE ME A PRIORITY SOMETHING I RARELY GET
AND THERE WE WERE BACK TO THE SAME OLD PLACE WHERE YOU'D CARELESSLY GIVE ME AN APOLOGY I KNEW YOU DID NOT MEAN AND ME GRACEFULLY ACCEPTING IT.

THE BACK AND FORTH THE ROLLERCOASTER RIDES WE HAD IT'S FUNNY HOW I EVENTUALLY FOUND COMFORT IN THOSE,
IF I'M BEING I WANT TO HATE YOU BECAUSE IF I DON'T AND BY ANY CHANCE YOU HAPPEN TO CALL CHANCES ARE I MIGHT FIND MYSELF NEXT YO YOU KNOWING EXACTLY HOW IT'LL END

I'M TORN BETWEEN REMEMBERING WHAT YOU PROMISED AND FACING REALITY OF YOU NOT PULLING THROUGH.

About this poem

As in our current days we deal with cases of GBV almost everyday. This poem touches a love story that starts all joyful and then end badly as the male partner becomes violent.
