Analysis of A Feathered Moment, Concluded

Brady Bowen 1973 (Louisiana)

When I tied the feathers in her hair
iridescent hues among shining flax
her eyes brimming with loving looks
small feet tapped an anticipatory beat
blackbird, bluejay, cardinal, finch

the ascendancy of spirit inside
she sang a hymn heavenward
warning of a flitting, flying invasion of joy
small feet tapped an anticipatory beat
blackbird, bluejay, cardinal, finch

at long last waving the Rhabdos over herself
that ancient rod of great renown
no transformation of the transgressor this
small feet tapped an anticipatory beat
blackbird, bluejay, cardinal, finch

a burden of birdsong, up she bore it
trailing sparrows whistling in the wind
a dun-colored ribbon gliding behind
small feet tapped an anticipatory beat
blackbird, bluejay, cardinal, finch

an ave sung; avian arias
rose up from greenfields hither and yon
their chorus she wore like a gown
small feet tapped an anticipatory beat
blackbird, bluejay, cardinal, finch

I watched until she met the sun
great Helios, the Dawnbringer
august and beaming in his pride
small feet tapped an anticipatory beat
blackbird, bluejay, cardinal, finch

return flight of daughter prodigal
a shout-scattered murmuration of escorts
and the embrace of flame touched not
small feet tapped an anticipatory beat
blackbird, bluejay, cardinal, finch

They spoke of fair Perseis, her mother
the princess of Oceanus' halls
her love broken by Aphrodite's curse
small feet tapped an anticipatory beat
blackbird, bluejay, cardinal, finch
