Analysis of Great Art
Scott Michael Potter 1966 (Grand Rapids, MI)
Great art transcends
What a brief examination comprehends
Whatever reigns as cultural preference
What an individual audience
Brings to the equation
Regardless of the connection;
Speaking instead—
Not from the head
Of this great art
Or of the heart
Yet of spirit and of soul
So who hear it feel part whole—
To all as equally
And powerfully,
Not as intellectually
Or even eloquently
But more spiritually
And intuitionally.

About this poem
How do you define GREAT ART? I have tried for so long to put words to the kind of art that actually moves me suddenly and abruptly, or slowly over time as if it is slowly seeping into my soul. I have written papers on it, and written papers on the difference between artists and Artists (I consider these Masters, Artists, while artists may create wonderful work, excellent clothing and jewelry, etc., yet they are not that Master whose work literally MOVES you, stirs you, grips you, enters your dream life, etc. ), settling on the notion that you must capitalize the word Artist when you are speaking of a Master like the Artist Dali, the Artist Prince, the Artist Michelangelo, the Artist Ovid, the Artist Dante, and so on. But, in all those treatments, none have satisfied me, nor does this poem, but, it comes closer to the point I think than even a 30-page paper manages. more »
