Analysis of The Black Box

Saw my dad today sitting on a mantle next to my mom. First Father's Day he's been with us in 8 years. No hugs, no kisses, no I love you's in return.

I saw my dad today, sitting in a dusty black plastic box, sealed only by scotch tape. His memory bear sitting next to that dusty plastic box, made of a shirt he wore.

I saw my dad today, a reminder of how short life is. The most significant loss in my life at that time, the only man I've truly loved, he took a part of my heart when he died.

I saw my dad today and that piece of my heart that died with him, no longer beating but burnt to ashes in that dusty black plastic box, sealed only with scotch tape.

About this poem

My father passed September 20, 2008 from lung cancer and was cremated. His ashes disappeared right after the cremation, for years we didn't know where they were out. Eight years after he died, I received a message from an uncle I hadn't seen nor spoken to since my dad died. My dad's dad passed away, and his wife was trying to get a hold of me. It turns out after 8 years, they had my dad's ashes. It was emotional, he was home where he belonged all these years.
