About this poem

My 7th grade teacher would make the entire class stand up and recite “Grumpy the Groundhog” by Arthur Guitermann at the beginning of English class - it was a poem in our English book. I could never understand the point of reciting it every day, unless it was an exercise in recitation? We would all have to recite the name of the poem and the poet’s name before the recitation began. Crazy!
