A Touch of Winter

The wind presses on the house and trees
It’s penetrating cold
Creates a formidable barrier
Not liked-there is no glee

I ensure my lip balm, gloves, coat and hat are at hand
My long johns have become my new best friend

The gray, damp stillness
Is penetrated by the shrill of a trumpet swan
Demanding commitment-
To a frozen pond
Or a late November’s remoistened cold

Looking for either snow or sunlight
Michigan’s weather only sinks one’s soul
And the trumpet...
