Response to wrong

Amber Chote 1991 (Seattle)

Do you see their faces?
Dark blessed skin,
Crowns of prepossessing locks,
Beauty engulfed by benedictions
Features of Gods, Kings, Queens
These are my mother's,
Her face, skin, body, and soul
No one direspects my mother.....
Not even me

About this poem

I wrote this poem after having a dream about being ashamed of my black family members. When I woke up I was more ashamed of myself. I thought about how I would respond to someone voicing their bigotry towards family and friends. This is my resolve.
