Armed, but Barely

Forge ahead
Newborn child of night
From the silt bed
Where you lie

You're no match
For bristling beast
Armed but barely
May your small heart carry you

As you head for the hills
With pride in tow
You've so much still to learn
But at least you know

Past the spines
Of gnashing teeth
Toward the tongues of fire
Their faint light desiring

To help you see your way
Through and clear
Of every obstacle
That's hidden near

Bold then cowed
Pained to see
How the cold night waters
Bode the sun's brightest ardor

Forge ahead
Forge ahead
