Jeg var en Gang paa den grønne Green,
Jeg var selv en Green, ja, en deilig En -
Jeg svaied i Vinden med Blade paa,
Og Fuglene sang, de velsignede Smaa!
    Det var min Barndoms Dage.
 
Men jeg slog mig en Dag fra Familien løs,
En Prygl var jeg bleven, jeg kaldte mig Knøs
Og drog saa i Verden paa Eventyr;
Der sprang jeg i Splinter og blev denne Fyr
    Jeg nu er. — Vil De bare behage.
 
Nu er jeg et Mandfolk, der har en Couleur,
Samt Lemmer, Manerer, Alt, som sig bør;
Jeg seer med Foragt paa den Tid, som forsvandt.
En Broder jeg søgte, — en Broder jeg fandt!
    I mig Du dit Billed modtage.
