Cora
Joe Strickland 1986 (Hobbysville, SC)
The elderly Cora sits in her chair,
though her body is frail,
her mind is still aware.
The memory of her days as a famous ballerina
are still alive in her heart,
though she remains still and silent.
She remembers the way the stage lights would shine
so brightly,
dancing to the magical beats
and rhythms of the night.
Her feet would trace patterns on the floor,
and her graceful movements
would captivate the audience,
who were just in awe.
Her graceful leaps and intricate spins,
as she effortlessly floated through the air,
gave the audience a glimpse
of her true beauty
and artistry.
Her captivating stage presence and charm,
was enough to make anyone
fall in love with this graceful dancer.
Though now she can only remember
those days from a distant past,
as she sits in her rest home
with nothing to do
but stare out the window.
She dreams of the days
she used to be the star of the show,
the one everyone was mesmerized by,
who had everyone in awe.
Though her time to take the stage has now passed,
her dreams and memories remain.
Everyday she still feels the same,
though she can no longer fly
and express herself
through the art of ballet.
Though the audience
can no longer
witness her beauty,
she knows they will never forget her.
The elderly Cora knows
she can never go back to the way things were,
but she can still dream
of those days and never forget them.
In her mind,
Cora will forever be a graceful ballerina,
drifting gracefully through the air,
captivating the audience
with her elegance and beauty.
