This is the norm
Aaliyah Mohamed 2005 (Western Cape, Cape Town)
This is the norm
Every day I wake up, and it's the same thing
3 women killed in delft, and that's only this week.

Repost.
Same story.
New face.
New case.
Another young one removed from his mother.
6 year old kidnapped before he goes to school.
Yet they go on and treat us like fools.
But this is the norm.
This is the world we are living in.
That secret house next to every corner shop.
We'll get in trouble if we try to call the cops.
I refuse to let my brother or sister go down in drugs.
I don't want to be the one who has to pull the plug.
But this is the norm
This is the world we are living in.
Walk out the house and there's another body laying in the streets.
Covered in blood.
Teen girl caught in the cross fire.
10 steps forward, another car is wrecked Brother saves his sister, so we pay our respects.
It's a reality we need to accept.
I can't lose another friend to a drunk driver or drug dealer.
So please, our streets need to be cleaner.
But this is the norm
This is the world we are living in.
6:45 and I arrive at school
All I hear is more bad news.
One hurts another.
Find a so called lover.
Teachers can't teach.
Teachers want to leave
Learners give up it's a ripple effect
It's an issue we need to disect
Bullying
Drop outs
Suicide

About this poem
In a society like today's, we've come to the point of being told to accept the new "norm". I've taken that and actually thought about what it means and how society has accepted it. How everything has become so normal that it seems like many of just don't care. Being a teenager is difficult, especially once you sit back and look at the world around you. You notice everything. Woman being hurt, children being taken from their homes. Losing family and friends to drugs. Losing a friend in a car accident protecting his younger sisters because they were hit by a drunk driver. Walking out of your house and you hear the name the next victim that was caught in crossfire. You go to school everyday and all you see are the broken hearts of people around you. Each facing their own battles. These are all societal norms that come up and we just move on. A reality we sometimes feel forced to accept. But this is just the norm. more »
