Down the Infernal Rabbit Hole

Nebyu Samuel 2002 (AMBO)

Crack me open
Venture to the depths of my mind
What do you see?

Abel slouched over a shriveled-up tree
A parchment refined from the corpse of a lamb
Pressed against his head
As a downpour of pure blood
Watered the seeds that have since grown into
Modern-day morality,

His children found him lying
On a fresh pile of
Discolored foliage
Whispering a final prayer,

Crack me open
Replace the ashtray before you
It is full
My lungs are imploring me
To halt the wave of incoming blackness,

Cleanse the air inside their confines
Breathe into them if you will
Place your ears against my chest
Can you hear the candor in the songs
Of the blind bard?

He wept as he sang about
The future
Psychosomatic suicide awaits us all
He said in the end
Before placing the barrel of the gun
Against the roof
Of his sultry mouth,

The dying song has been sung
The end has come
Can you see the final sunset?

My ailment is but a curse
Local priests are powerless against
Have you provoked our patrons?
One of them inquired,

I showed him an emerald necklace
I kept as a memento of
My visit to the underworld
His silence spoke volumes,

Are you still inside?

The clouds above us
Had parted
Not so long ago,

The sun is vacant
As you might have noticed,

This darkness is but a
Wrath of a billion dead stars,

Crack me open
Remove my seeds
Salvage the flesh,

I am decaying,

My mind is decaying
A white magician approached me today
On a wagon led by two headless
Horses
He told me of the rapid decimation
Of my synapses
I hope death finds you soon
He said
Before riding into a horizon of amnesty,

Clouds parted
Everything is worse,

Crack me open
Wield the axe from your backyard
Aim for the center of my skull
Split me in half
Dig through the spoilt mess
Redeem the pure and the transparent,

As I trembled in my crutches
An old bloke came my way
And offered me a hand
Sympathy in his eyes
So copious that it is enough
To revive those who died
In solitude,

My zenith is long gone
The way down is petrifying,

And I am falling.

About this poem

Pain targets a certain part of you and subjects it to decadence. Suffering? Suffering is pain all over. Suffering starts at your locus and won't stop digging until it breaks the emaciated surface. This poem is about suffering. It's about leading someone through the wretched landscape that is your soul. The reader gets to discern the beauty in the self-destructive chaos found within the poet. I hope you enjoy every metaphor.
