A Somonka Lovestruck Confession

She possesses me.
Always haunting me in dreams.
And so I wake up.
Finding that she still haunts me.
The truth is, I am lovestruck.

How should I respond.
When I am just your shadow.
Not your persona.
I am only Mister Hyde.
Element of your psyche.

About this poem

Written in the classic style of a Japanese somonka art form involving a two-part poem, with a statement and a response, this two-stanza unrhymed poem recreates the Dr. Jekyll-Mister Hyde hypothesis that in each individual is a “good” side (represented by the somonka statement, or the the first stanza of the poem), and an “evil” or hidden, suppressed side (represented by the somonka response, or the second stanza of the poem). What this somonka poem informs us is how essentially “ingrained” a response is to the somonka statement.
