Eternal Love

Karl Constantine FOLKES 1935 (Portland)

Who then shall I love
If hatred surrounds me everywhere?
Whom shall I forever
And forever endear?
Whom shall I with eternal love
Display my heart without fear?
It is to thee who gave me
Breath and life.
It is to thee who cares for me
Throughout every strife.
It is to thee who within me
Keeps me strong.
It is to thee who within me
Rights all wrong.

About this poem

This poem was written “on the spot” so to speak, at the urge of the planners of the Renaissance Faire held at Tuxedo Park, New York, during the Summer of 2015, asking attending folks to submit any poem that spoke about Love. The author, not having come prepared with a poem, decided to compose one —yes, literally on the spot, and later delivered it to an appreciative celebratory audience.
