Happily Innocent

Crossing the border northern cold
carving out soap bars boats to unfold
traveling fast, then faster dirt road
uncle at the wheel as the pistons explode
early morning fishing, cottage on the lake
digging up earthworms dirty hands partake
relative candy company, willing to share
firecrackers and flowers exploding everywhere
sitting on the boat dock rope in hand
grandfathers motorboat pull me up to stand
bumble-bees hive hidden arches roof
pestered them stinging toes-lips-thumbs proof
Canadian shiny nickels money to spend
riding ranch pony cowboys and Indians pretend
body cast of tragedy bedside worry
feeling helpless, hopeful wellness in a hurry
island middle lake destination of lunch
sandwich filling stomach chips that crunch
excitement involved, responsibilities solved
three kids at play the vacation way
