Analysis of SCREAMS OF THE MARY BELL
Kenvil G Atkins 1952 (Micoud)
Suddenly there it was the flashing light of the lighthouse beacon.
As it zipped past me overhead
Recently my courage was renewed as the beam of light shone.
From a distant shore
I must have drifted ten miles or more for now my body is weary.
And I am about to give in
Don’t you give up on me I heard myself say hold on to yourself?
And pray.
We had celebrated the night before everyone was drunk no one.
Heard the captain’s bell.
When disaster struck the Mary Bell, it plunged beneath the icy
Waters
I heard the anguished screams of the dying as they passed me by
Still trying
It must have been the liquor in me for I cling to a tabletop.
Still looking at the others drop
Must I go on or should I stop it pains me so sometimes I
Believe I’ll pop.
For I know my turn would be the next I try to scream but to
No avail
The wind had stopped there was calm when the vessel and crew.
Could not prevail.
Then the waves grew rough splashing on my tabletop as if to
Say wake up get up.
I held on tighter with all my might as I drifted on throughout.
The night
The icy waters drench my bones there was a blindness in my\
Sight
Above my head, the searchlight shines too worn out to shout.
So, I drifted through the night.
