The Day after Christmas
Twas the day after Christmas
And all through the house,
The magic was missing
And so was my spouse.
We wore re-gifted faces of holiday cheer
While raising a toast to a Happy New Year
I was sipping an egg-nog, when he ran out of beer;
"I'll be back in a minute", as he flew out of here.
Paper and ribbons are yesterday's trash
Laced with the scent of burnt, yule-tide ash.
In a trance I decided to undress the tree;
Withered and dried-up, a lot like me.
I really don't blame him for leaving this life
All his unmet dreams, and an old, withered wife.
But he should have chosen a better day,
He was the predator, but now he's the prey.
The elf's off the shelf, and the ornaments stored.
I've swept up the ashes, but now I'm bored.
For thirty years, he thought I was charmed...
He'd control my life, and leave me unarmed.
I hope he remembers, he gave me a gun
To protect me from evil; like men on the run.
And with that I wish you all peace and goodwill....
"Happy New Year dear friends", postmarked 'Amityville'.
About this poem
A poem entirely inspired by creepiness. I actually wanted to write a poem about how so much of the 'magic' of Christmas disappears the day after. Instead, I was re watching the old classic 'Amityville Horror' and decided to give my poem a twist.
