River of Regret

Past deeds swept under the bridge
in the river of regret
should be gone ’cause they can’t be changed,
but, alas, they plague me yet.

Stalled in a swirling eddy,
they flood me with reminders of sin.
I want to forget my errors,
but I’m reminded again and again.

Why do they still swamp my mind,
accusing and full of blame?
What is done is forever done,
but I drown in them just the same.

About this poem

This poem is a lament about how, at times, I catch myself reviewing past mistakes or blunders, things I wish I could do over, which of course is impossible, and feeling the pain of remorse all over again.
