Two dirty ragged orphan children sat on the stairs of an abandoned building entrance. The smaller boy (me) had one eye bandaged and ate food out of a can. The older girl (my sister) smoked and read discarded magazines. A car on fire rolled by as we chased it. Around the corner music played from an outdated boom box. I listened to the music but then violently smashed the boom box against the pavement. Later that pivotal day, we tossed bottles off the highway embankment. We chose to leave this life for poetry.
