Boys Will Be Boys

Boys will be boys,
But girls will grow up in a world,
Where their body determines their worth,
Wearing a crop top somehow inviting--
The visible thoughts flying
around your head.
They will soon learn to notice
slow eyes slithering,...

Thank you so much! Oh wow! I call myself a "writer", but I've been writing and rewriting this response for the last half hour! I guess I'm trying to get it perfect because I know that few words will ever perfectly capture the feeling of knowing that somewhere, one day,
oneperson will be able to relate to the words of a young, teenage girl.

It is comments like these that make me want to write forever.
Thanks again, -- Hannah. :)

That makes sense. But again, I think it could be discouraging to new poets. Also, coming up with a solution to this could be tricky because everyone feels differently about it. This was my first poetry competition, and I think I would feel disheartened if I were to see, either rude comments on my poem or none at all. It really is a slippery slope because poetry is a very personal art form, but I agree that there should be checks and balances to make sure that people take voting seriously.

I think the reasons for not showing the number of votes for each poem were because it could be discouraging to see the amount that a winner got, compared to you... after all, this is supposed to be a safe space to show the works that you are proud of.

I voted for this poem because I think it really captured the pain and self-blame that the abused feels when they are in an abusive relationship. When reading it, I was almost moved to tears by how powerful and emotional it was. I also loved that, in the end, the readers don't know what happened to the abused woman, but we know that she eventually came to the sense that the problem wasn't her fault, which, speaking from experience, is an incredibly tough thing to realize.

Thank you so much for sharing, and good luck. :)
