Homer sang of lust and pride and ire,
Vain princes’ scourging arrows, swords,
Battle-clangour, blunt blood, fear and fire:
How Achilles wept at Patroclus’ funeral pyre
Before blind wrath drove him...

And stalk the streets of sense

With ghastly howl, screeching lust

For blood or ale, cheap thrills or vain

Tricks and treats; and, having wailed

Their hymns to infernal...
