Apology Tour

Lawrence S. Pertillar 1947 (Connecticut)

With a wiping of tears,
From drying glazed eyes.
And performances,
Of hugs and air kisses...
Inches away from cheeks to miss.
Evil deeds to intend them,
Are expected to be forgiven.
To forget them meant.

As the beginning of the apology tour,
Takes place by those hoping...
A normalcy promises to return,
Back to an accepted dysfunction.
A function,
Awaiting to leave at the junction...
Of a disturbing reality.
Bare.
Naked.
Without the pretentiousness,
Of custom made costumes to charade.

'Oh...
The woe!'
By all who have lived to survive,
Those acts of division and conflicts.
Publicly displayed.

And the popularity of racism?
Slowly...
Is set aside until the next virus arrives.
To come to threaten,
The quality of lives...
Picking through remnants,
Of valued delusions sought to seek.
Done to reveal,
The unmasking once again...
A reality that exposes,
Who we are as a people.
Wanting that feeding of selfishness.
To express nothing learned.
Or feel it grateful to be blessed,
Not to be a statistic left...
Like those who had been shown,
Our disrespect to care less!

But yet...
The apology tour,
Is expected to relieve those tensions.
Momentarily!
As if a festival anticipated,
With confetti, ballons...
And door prizes for the ones,
Lucky enough to claim them!
