Mud Dreams

Greg Lanier 1962 (Atlanta, GA)

I wandered to the edge of town
And thought that I should turn around
But then a light came from the sky
That bade me question questioning why
And so I wandered a little farther
Unassuming - not a bother
When suddenly a truck came by
And splashed some mud into my eye
And so I screamed, “This isn’t fair!”
I threw a rock
I threw a chair

I threw a chair?
What’s this I said?
I had not ventured from my bed
Except to dream in tales of gloom
I still laid prisoned in my room
Then lying back from whence I came
I felt a subtle, itching pain
Reaching hands up to my head
I scratched until my finger’s bled
And to this day can’t understand
How mud clods filled my bleeding hands
