The return of chivalry?

Phil Roberts 1957 (Melbourne)

Are days of valour
Lost forever more?   As scholars
Want us to believe.

Are the days of knights
Fighting for yon damsel’s honour,
Lost to ancient lore?

Are dragons fighting
Against most valiant knights,
No more than mere legend?

Has the time of myths
Maidens and men, slipped away,
To be no more?

Will kings and castles
Attacked by winged saurians
Not be seen again?

Yes, what of tales of
Winged creatures, that like to fight,
And fly to make war?

Reptiles hovering
Above much-travelled paths, where
Naive merchants wend?

Fire-breathing dragons
Which live and die to fight;
Through the air they soar?

What of holy grails
And most sacred quests pursued by,
Armour-wearing men?

Shall we see again
Great chivalry when knights ride,
On some holy chore?

Probably not!
