The awful place

Phil Roberts 1957 (Melbourne)

None may leave the awful place
A place where none know hope,
Where no-one dares to dream or strive
And most just barely cope.

For terror rules this dreary land
A land of shattered dreams,
Where belief has turned to sad dismay
A land of sobbing screams.

None may leave the awful place
Well ... none may leave alive,
No-one dares to dream or wish
It’s a trial just to survive.

We learn to live here without faith
And never to aim up high,
We’re seeing out the awful days
And longing soon to die.

None may leave the awful place
Well ... not until the grave,
It takes us all we have to live
There’s nothing left to save.

A place where only losers go
And the winners stay well clear,
A place where apathy takes charge
And life is forever drear.

None may leave the awful place
Or flee their awful cell,
Some may call it West Footscray
But most just call it Hell.
